Artist statement

Susanna Costantini is an artist of tactile memory. She explores the world through the rhythmic cadence of the loom, focusing on the silent narratives of materials, the wisdom of the hands, and the intersection between ancestral craftsmanship and contemporary digital logic.

By initiating projects rooted in "material archaeology"—such as the Spigolature series—her practice is inseparable from the connections she weaves with the fibers she salvages and the territories she maps. Whether through the lunar-inspired topographies of Terrae or the symbolic presence of her Flags, the artist offers the spectator an interpretive threshold, transforming the rigid grid of the warp into a fluid stream of consciousness.

Theoretical Framework

My practice is guided by what I call the "wisdom of the hands"—an ancestral knowledge that resides in the body rather than the intellect.

Weaving is a rhythmic, meditative process where the physical gesture precedes the conscious thought.

As Henri Focillon profoundly noted:

"The hand is action: it takes, it creates, at times it would seem even to think."

The loom imposes a rigid framework: the intersection of warp and weft.

To the untrained eye, this might seem like a constraint, a binary prison of vertical and horizontal lines.

However, I view this structure as the very foundation of freedom.

Within the strict geometry of the warp, I find the space to escape the rules.

By manipulating textures, tension, and materials, the loom becomes a system of infinite creative potential.

The framework is not a boundary, but a launchpad for evasion—a way to subvert the grid from within, allowing the unexpected to emerge from the order.

“ My process is an act of poetic reclamation, I often work with residual warps —the remnants of an entire year of labor— to create 'interior landscapes' where every knot and thread functions as a chronological record of my creative journey.”

SPIGOLATURE

Inspired by Agnes Varda’s documentary Les glaneurs et la glaneuse, these textile panels are the result of a 'gleaning' process.

The gleaning activity is something necessary we practice everyday and it has something to do with the recovery of value both material and emotional. The practice of gleaning brings with it a moment of choice, you evaluate, you decide whether to let go, recovering or processing.

BANDIERE

The Bandiere series represents the idea of condensing into a fabric those natural and emotional spaces to which one feels one belongs or needs most. These “Flags” are also a homage to the archaic nature of Abruzzo with its wide and still wild spaces. Flags are crafted by using mainly Abruzzo-sourced organic wool from grazing sheep in the Campo Imperatore, an area at over 2000 metres of altitude, silk, linen and hemp.

TERRAE

Inspired by the lunar maps of Galileo and Hevelius, the TERRAE series approaches fantastic ideas of discovering new lands where imaginary and personal universes take on a hybrid texture. Terrae tapestries visually materialise and simulate these imaginary spaces. These tapestries constitute an invitation to play with the imagination and seem to ask: What do you see when you look at me?
